Since the release of the 1998 paper in The Lancet (download below), which suggested the possibility of a link between a novel form of bowel disease, autism, and the MMR vaccine, one of the report’s thirteen co-authors, Dr. Andrew Wakefield, has been the subject of great controversy and defamation. "We have identified a chronic enterocolitis in children that may be related to neuropsychiatric dysfunction. In most cases, onset of symptoms was after measles, mumps, and rubella immunisation. Further investigations are needed to examine this syndrome and its possible relation to this vaccine."
