When it comes to vaccine injury awareness, informed consent and vaccine choice, no one has done more or fought harder or longer for the rights of parents and children than Barbara Loe Fisher and the National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) which Barbara co-founded with Kathi Williams in 1982 under the name Dissatisfied Parents Together. Barbara was there when the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act was passed by Congress. The following HighWire interview with Barbara tells the whole story about the 1986 Act and more; and is, perhaps, the most powerful HighWire episode to date. Please take time to watch the interview, read the supporting facts, and share with others. The 1986 National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act created by members of Congress after more than four years of deliberation with vaccine stakeholders, including parents of vaccine injured children, medical trade associations, public health agencies, vaccine manufacturers, and Administration officials, was signed into law as part of an Omnibus health bill by President Ronald Reagan on Nov. 14, 1986. The Act’s provisions specifically applied to federally licensed and recommended vaccines for children routinely mandated by states for school attendance. Read more. Watch interview. “There is no justice in the compensation program. It’s a joke. It’s a cruel joke. It’s an imitation, a poor imitation of a court trial in Washington DC, in the U.S. Court of Special Claims.” “…every admission, every award, is an admission that vaccines can do that; and that’s been the biggest problem because no one wants to acknowledge in the system, wants to acknowledge the extent of the problem with vaccine injury and death… so it’s minimize, cover-up, deny.” “I think the average physician who gives vaccines has been taught to believe in them.” "...when it comes to vaccines for children...there’s a psychological dis-incentive, there’s an emotional dis-incentive, for doctors who have been schooled to believe vaccines are safe and they’re doing something good for a child to actually get their arms around the idea that what they’re doing is harming a child.” “What must not be cannot be.” Dr. Wolfgang Ehrengut (German Immunologist) “When I look back I say, ‘ Who do you trust? Who can you trust? You only really can trust your own ability to intellectually look at information; try to find the information the most that you can; and to be able to have the legal ability to make a choice without being sanctioned for the choice that you make.” I have always felt a certain "kinship" with Barbara Loe Fisher. We're about the same age; we both had our first children in 1978; and Barbara's book with Harris L. Coulter, PhD, "DPT: A Shot in the Dark" was instrumental in the vaccine decisions I made with my youngest child born in 1988 and in my ongoing vaccine choice advocacy work which has now spanned more than 35 years. It was an honor for me to meet Barbara for the first time in 2017 and thank her personally. I remember reading the Katzenelson quote below when I visited the Holocaust Museum with the mother of a 15 month old who died within 24 hours of receiving seven vaccines in three shots. Like Barbara, I too was deeply moved as I thought of the countless children who have been injured or died following vaccines. - JFS “The first to perish were the children... From these a new dawn might have risen.” Yitzhak Katzenelson Holocaust Museum, Washington, DC “My dream is that when I take my last breath, that we have freedom to make medical decisions including vaccine decisions without being punished by government or doctors or anyone else. To me that’s a basic natural right given to us by God to make those kinds of decisions.” Barbara Loe Fisher Thank you Barbara, Kathi and NVIC for all you have done and continue to do. God bless and take care . . .
