Dr. Andrew Wakefield is the world-renowned gastrointestinal surgeon and researcher whose 1998 paper (which you can download and read below) suggested a possible link between childhood vaccines, intestinal inflammation, and neurologic injury in children. As a result, he lost his job in the Department of Medicine at London’s Royal Free Hospital, his career, his medical license and his country. In this recorded presentation, Dr. Wakefield discusses vaccines; autism and its effect on our society and our economy; and the CDC Whistleblower. I find Dr. Wakefield's wisdom and insight, as well as his gentleness and humility, truly inspiring.
"So when the parents say, I believe my child regressed after the measles, mumps, rubella vaccine or any other vaccine, then we take that very, very seriously because we were wrong and they were right; and we need to learn as physicians, a little humility. They were right. Listen to the patient. Listen to the mother because no one knowns their child like the mother They were not anti vaccine They took their child to be vaccinated on time and this is what they are reporting happened to their child."
Dr. Andrew Wakefield at the 2015 Leadership & Longevity Conference
"The important thing is the parents were right. The parents were right from the outset.
It takes us back to that fundamental rule of clinical medicine, that as a doctor, you listen to the patient, or in this case, to the patient’s parents. The mother knows her child better than anyone else. We are here on this earth, now, not because of medical science, not because of public health, not because of doctors. We are here on this earth, now, because of maternal instinct. It’s the most powerful force in the world . . . we ignore that instinct there are perils; and medicine has sought to usurp that instinct by saying we in the white coat know better. No we don’t. No we don’t."
